I am interested in how the British Welfare State was created. Especially, I have been studying the British national health insurance system (NHI), which was established in the early 20th century. First, I showed NHI had a unique characteristic in that it inherited the British tradition of ‘self-help’. Second, I re-examined the historical significance of national tuberculosis measures by focusing on the Sanatorium Benefit under NHI. My current interest lies in analyzing the impact of NHI on the British medical world.
