Research Field
Japanese Economic History, Comparative Economic History
Research Theme
My research theme is to clarify the characteristics of Japanese economic development through analyzing the development process of "indigenous industries" such as the weaving industry and the brewing industry. Trying detailed case study of the putting-out system functioning in the development process of the weaving industry, I found the particular development process which should be called "indigenous economic development". The importance of the "local notables" as a risk-taking investor is also revealed through the study of soy-sauce brewers. My recent concern is to understand the changing process of "indigenous economic development" in early 20th century. I am also interested in the comparison of Japanese economic development with that of European and Asian countries' using the concept of "indigenous economic development".
