Research Field
Japanese Economic History

Research Theme
I have been working on institutional analysis of the Japanese economic development. The major research projects are as follows. First, I have investigated on the Japanese war-economy during the Second World War, focusing on the planning and control by the government and their institutional and organizational basis. Second, I have analyzed the role of industrial policies in postwar Japan, namely foreign exchange allocation, coordination of investment through the deliberative councils etc., using original documents and micro-data. Third, I have re-examined zaibatsu in early twentieth century and merchant coalitions in nineteenth century, focusing on their governance function.
